MVA Study Trip to Guangzhou

On the weekend of 10/11 November 2012, the Experience Design-concentration of AVA’s MVA-programme – for the first time including students of Year 1 and Year 2! – hit the road and went off to Shenzhen and Guangzhou in China.

Firstly we visited the OCT Art & Design Gallery to see the current exhibition with Dutch artists. From there we walked across the OCT (=Oversea’s Chinese Territory) to the OCT Loft-area where we had a look at various small galleries and art-shops, and had some really good noodle-soup for lunch.

Nap-time on the bus took us to Guangzhou, where we checked into the new Crowne Plaza: quite luxurious for a study trip, but we were making use of the opportunity to work on a case study about IHG-hotels (supported by the regional management of IHG). So it was all about work after all…

Saturday evening we investigated the Redtory Art District in the east of Guangzhou – as compared to OCT Loft in Shenzhen – before calling it a day with a beautiful group dinner with local food.

Sunday morning was spent almost exclusively by checking out the amenities of the Crowne Plaza – after all we needed to experience first hand what they offer to be able to write about it – before heading towards the Guangzhou Triennial at the Guangzhou Museum of Art. After getting a tour of the exhibition first, we split up in groups and worked on the development of six self-guided tours of the show for six particular characters.

The trip was finally rounded off by a guided tour of Zaha Hadid’s recently opened new Opera House. Unfortunately there is no show on this month, but we happened to stumble across an eye-opening rehearsal for some annual meeting of the Agricultural Bank of China… WOW!

Ultimately we had to leave Guangzhou and arrived back in Hong Kong happily on Sunday night: a good experience weekend.
