Artists Say

by Leecat Ho

by Leecat Ho

Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest cities of the world. It is the self-proclaimed ‘Asian World City’. As a well-developed city, it is the financial centre of Asia, a tourist favourite, shopping /food paradise and famous for its harbour view. Well, how about art? Not even close.

In Hong Kong, such a commercial city, not much people will choose to live as artists. And most families may not support you to be a full time artist. Some people even equal “artist” to “jobless” or even to “poor”.

Artists are just ordinary people, they have to eat, rest and have a shelter. In this project I will research how various artists earn a living in Hong Kong. How can they survive in such a city that put commerce and economy as first priority?

With the project outcome, I hope to provide some understandings to ordinary people about what artists actually do. I wish the outcome will not only be shown within the classroom, but instead the Hong Kong public is my target audience. I hope the outcome can arise some awareness about the art industry’s ecology.
