To be honest, I am not an artist at all. For me, art should be easy to understand, and everyone should be able to understand it without having to ask too much questions. I also believe that design is a tool to generate profit, and a good idea should be logical and practical. I love ideas that are simple, effective and fun.
When I was a kid, I wished my life to be fun, no matter what job I’d be having in the future. Alas I always claimed I wanted to be a doctor to fulfill my parent’s dreams, despite I didn’t want to be a doctor at all.
Later, my parents bought a computer for my sister and me. This was when my fun time begun. I got ‘addicted’ to computer games, and thanks to this addiction, I learnt a lot about computer operation by myself, read lots of computer books, and even re-assembled it when I was left alone at home. In secondary school I became the class technician fixing computers for my classmates. Apparently I was a nerd in that period…
Now you may wonder why I didn’t study computer science and engineering. The truth is, I learnt my skills for fun, not for work. Therefore, instead of ordinary computer classes, I chose to study digital media in IVE. This programme was closer to what I wanted: to make funny things by computer: graphics, www, interactions, animation, video production…
Eventually, I choose to work as motion graphic designer as my career. Once again the reason is simple: as long as it is can be show on screen, you can put anything you want into it. Doesn’t that sound like a hell of a good time? I can use my skills to create extraordinary videos. I don’t think I will ever become bored with this job.
In seven years of working as motion graphic designer, I have made a lot of motion graphics for a lot of brands; when my work is shown in public, I feel I am performing my own live show on a stage. There is a Chinese motto saying “One minute on the stage, requires ten years of hard work.” Sometimes I feel embarrassed when I realise my work could’ve been better after the show, sometimes I am proud of myself when my colleagues say “That’s so cool!” In any case, there is always room for improvement, and my show will become better and better.
